Ocean Networks Canada
Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) is in charge of $150 million dollars worth of advanced technology, most of which we sunk in the ocean. Don't worry, we did it carefully - our two world-leading cabled ocean observatories (NEPTUNE Canada and VENUS) use innovative engineering, data communication, and sensor technologies to gather continuous real-time data and images from the ocean depths.
Land-based scientists around the world can conduct offshore and deep sea experiments remotely over the internet . . . for free! In fact, anyone can sign up to check out our real-time video, cameras, sound recording etc., and we have lots of videos and pictures that make you feel like you are right there, up to 2,660 metres under the sea.
ONC also has a Centre for Enterprise & Engagement (ONCCEE for short), a Canadian Centre of Excellence in Commercialization & Research with a focus on ocean science, technology & education. We want to take ONC - and Canada's - awesome technology like fibre-optic communications, power systems design, data management, sensors and robotics, and let the world know about it (and want to take it home).
ONC is a University of Victoria initiative, based on Vancouver Island with observatory nodes in the surrounding northeast Pacific ocean.
